The Fantastic Four becomes public enemies #1 when a series of crimes are pinned on them and they eventually end up on the lam.
Determined to exonerate themselves, the FF have come to the conclusion that unknown foes have been impersonating them.
Turns out that these foes are a quartet of shapeshifting alien invaders known as the Skrulls. They have turned their attentions on Earth, and seek to take out the Fantastic Four, by turning the world against them.
The FF manage to corner the would-be invaders. Reed scare the Skrulls away by showing him monsters and robots of all kinds who can rise to defend the Earth against invaders (using Marvel comics to make his point, no less).
The Skrulls are convinced and call off the invasion. However, due to the nature of their powers they can't be contained in any ordinary cells.
Therefore, Reed convinces them to change their appearance one last time, and take the shape of creatures that can't possibly hurt mankind: cows!
